ḤADĪTH OF THE DAY

Sa‘d Ibn-Abī-Waqqāṣ said, "I became very ill during the year of The Conquest [of Makkah] (1), and I was on the brink of death. The Messenger, peace and blessings of God be upon him, came to visit me and I asked him, ‘Messenger of God, I have a considerable wealth, and I do not have any heirs other than my daughter. Should I bequeath all of my wealth [to charity]?’ He replied, ‘No.’ 'Two-thirds of my wealth, then?’ I asked. He replied, ‘No.’ ‘So, half of my wealth?’ I asked. He replied, ‘No.’ So, I asked, ‘One-third?’ He replied, ‘One-third; and one-third is a lot. Leaving your inheritors with wealth is certainly better than leaving them dependant and begging from others. Indeed, you do not spend anything [for the sake of God] without being rewarded for it, even [if it is] a morsel that you put in your wife’s mouth.’ I lamented, ‘Messenger of God, I will be left behind after my hijrah.'(2) He replied, ‘Indeed, staying behind after me, doing [good] deeds for the sake of God, will only elevate you and raise you in rank. Perhaps you are being left behind so that some people will benefit from you and others will be harmed by you. O God, complete the hijrah of my Companions and do not turn them back on their heels.' However, the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, lamented the wretched Sa‘d Ibn-Khawlah who died in Makkah [before migrating to Madīnah]." (3) Footnotes: (1) Most scholars agree that the narrator meant The Farewell Pilgrimage of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, not the year of The Conquest of Makkah because the narrator had no children at that time. (2) The migration from Makkah to Madīnah. In this instance it refers to the return to Madīnah after the Conquest. (3) It is recommended that a person not bequeath more than one-third of his legacy to charity. Some scholars prefer even less than this amount since the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, “... and one-third is a lot.”

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ سُهَيْلِ بْنِ أَبِى صَالِحٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِى هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ قِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا يَعْدِلُ الْجِهَادَ قَالَ لاَ تَسْتَطِيعُونَهُ. فَرَدُّوا عَلَيْهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلاَثًا كُلُّ ذَلِكَ يَقُولُ لاَ تَسْتَطِيعُونَهُ. فَقَالَ فِى الثَّالِثَةِ مَثَلُ الْمُجَاهِدِ فِى سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ مَثَلُ الْقَائِمِ الصَّائِمِ الَّذِى لاَ يَفْتُرُ مِنْ صَلاَةٍ وَلاَ صِيَامٍ حَتَّى يَرْجِعَ الْمُجَاهِدُ فِى سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى وَفِى الْبَابِ عَنِ الشَّفَاءِ وَعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ حُبْشِىٍّ وَأَبِى مُوسَى وَأَبِى سَعِيدٍ وَأُمِّ مَالِكٍ الْبَهْزِيَّةِ وَأَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ. وَهَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ وَقَدْ رُوِىَ مِنْ غَيْرِ وَجْهٍ عَنْ أَبِى هُرَيْرَةَ عَنِ النَّبِىِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم.
The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, was asked, "What equals Jihād (1) (in reward)?" He replied, "You cannot endure it!" The question was put to him two or three times and every time he replied, "You cannot endure it". On the third time he added, "The example of a striver in the way of God is that of a person who continuously offers prayer and observes fast; [and] who does not get tired of praying nor [of] fasting until the striver in the way of God returns [from Jihād]." The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said - meaning that God, Almighty and Sublime is He, says, "The striver in the way of God (1) has My pledge, if I take him (by death), to make him inherit Paradise, and if I return him, I return him with reward or booty." حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ أَخْبَرَنَا حَيْوَةُ بْنُ شُرَيْحٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِى أَبُو هَانِئٍ الْخَوْلاَنِىُّ أَنَّ عَمْرَو بْنَ مَالِكٍ الْجَنْبِىَّ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ فَضَالَةَ بْنَ عُبَيْدٍ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَنَّهُ قَالَ كُلُّ مَيِّتٍ يُخْتَمُ عَلَى عَمَلِهِ إِلاَّ الَّذِى مَاتَ مُرَابِطًا فِى سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّهُ يُنْمَى لَهُ عَمَلُهُ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ وَيَأْمَنُ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْقَبْرِ. وَسَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ الْمُجَاهِدُ مَنْ جَاهَدَ نَفْسَهُ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى وَفِى الْبَابِ عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ وَجَابِرٍ. وَحَدِيثُ فَضَالَةَ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ.
The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, " The deeds of all the deceased are sealed (cease to increase) except for someone who dies while standing firm in the way of God: that person's deeds are increased until the Day of Resurrection and he (1) is saved from the tribulation of the grave." The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, also said, "A striver in the way of God (2) is one who strives against one's self (i.e. against one's own temptations and desires)." حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ عَنْ أَبِى الأَسْوَدِ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ وَسُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ يَسَارٍ أَنَّهُمَا حَدَّثَاهُ عَنْ أَبِى هُرَيْرَةَ عَنِ النَّبِىِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ مَنْ صَامَ يَوْمًا فِى سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ زَحْزَحَهُ اللَّهُ عَنِ النَّارِ سَبْعِينَ خَرِيفًا. أَحَدُهُمَا يَقُولُ سَبْعِينَ وَالآخَرُ يَقُولُ أَرْبَعِينَ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ غَرِيبٌ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ. وَأَبُو الأَسْوَدِ اسْمُهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ نَوْفَلٍ الأَسَدِىُّ الْمَدَنِىُّ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى وَفِى الْبَابِ عَنْ أَبِى سَعِيدٍ وَأَنَسٍ وَعُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ وَأَبِى أُمَامَةَ.
The Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, "Whoever fasts a day for God's sake, God will remove him (1) seventy autumns (2) away from the Fire." One narrator relating this ḥadīth said seventy, while another narrator said forty.
